Summary
Charts show stratigraphic information for certain oil and gas fields and other
areas having hydrocarbon potential.
Extent of Program
Petroleum resource areas nationwide.
Available Product Coverage
Random. Maps available are catalogued in the following sources:
Publications of the Geological Survey, 1879-1961", "Publications of the
Geological Survey, 1962-1970","Publications of the U.S. Geological survey, 1971
through 1981", and annual supplements for 1982 and later years. New maps are
listed in the monthly catalog, "New Publications of the U.S. Geological Survey".
These sources are available at Earth Science Information center offices, in
USGS libraries, and may be available at other earth science libraries, such as
those of universities.
Information Content
OC-Series publications present geologic, geochemical, and geophysical
information about areas that contain known or potential petroleum resources.
The information is not typically in map form but consists of such items as well
logs, correlation diagrams, graphs, and tables that describe the physical
characteristics of rock units in petroleum resource areas. Data types include
the following: general physical attributes such as stratigraphic thickness,
lithology, grain size, mineralogy, permeability, and porosity; specialized
attributes such as organic carbon content, kerogen content, and vitrinite
reflectance; well-log data such as spontaneous potential and resistivity; and
borehole gravity measurements. Some charts present seismic data. Some charts
are accompanied by an explanatory text.
