Small-Craft Nautical Charts

These charts are published at scales of 1:10,000 to 1:80,000, and their folded formats were designed specifically for use in the limited space in small boats. Types of small-craft charts include Folio and Area charts which provide coverage of harbors and bays as separate chart panels contained in a folder. Also in this category are Route charts of the Intracoastal Waterways and Recreational Charts in book format for selected Great Lakes areas. All of these charts carry conventional nautical chart detail plus information of interest to small-craft operators, such as enlargement of harbors, currents, weather data, rules-of-the-road information, locations of marine facilities, anchorages, and courses and distances.

These charts are used primarily by recreational boat owners and commercial small-craft operators, but they are also an important source of information to Federal, state and local coastal planning, engineering, and development agencies.

Canoe Charts

These are a series of charts of the Minnesota-Ontario Border Lakes designed for small, shallow-draft vessels. Most do not show hydrograph.

Marine Facility Charts

These are conventional charts overprinted with information important to small-craft operators, and include photos, location of marine facilities, and other information of interest to the small boat navigator printed on the reverse.

Nautical Training (TR) Charts

This is a special series charts used for training purposes, primarily by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, the U.S. Power Squadrons, and state-run boating safety classes. Since these special charts are not corrected for Notice To Mariners, they are not to be used for navigation.

U.S. Coast Pilot

A nine-volume series of books covering contiguous stretches of the coastline. Volumes are sold individually, allowing users to purchase only those covering their intended cruising area. These books provide detailed information to supplement nautical charts, particularly for mariners cruising unfamiliar waters. Useful information includes location of fuel piers, repair and haul-out facilities, local navigation regulations including, for example, hours of drawbridge operation, descriptions of natural and cultural shoreline features, tides and tidal currents, local weather conditions, and navigational hazards.

The nine volumes cover the coastal margins of the conterminous United States, the Great Lakes including the St. Lawrence River, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Hawaii, and the Alaskan coast. All volumes are published annually except for the two Alaska volumes which have a biennial schedule.

Tables of Distances Between United States Ports

Assembles under one cover the separate distance table found in each of the Coast Pilot volumes. The distances shown are the shortest distances that safe navigation permits. The tables are useful for trip planning to determine the time allowed for passage. Users of these tables include: recreational boaters and yachters, commercial boat operators and shipping companies, boater service organizations, and commercial fishermen.

Tidal Current Charts

These charts graphically represent tidal currents in selected bays and harbors of the United States. Each series consists of a set of 12 or 13 charts that depict, by means of arrows and figures, the direction and speed of the tidal current for equal intervals of the tidal cycle.

Tidal Current Tables

The tidal current tables list predicted times of minimum and maximum tidal currents and current velocities for each day of the year at 54 places located along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of North America and the Pacific coast of Asia. The tables also provide the conversion factors for predicting tidal currents at 2400 subordinate stations in these areas.

Tide Table

Tide tables list the predicted times and heights of high and low waters for each day of the year for about 200 of the most important harbors throughout the world. The tables also contain conversion factors for tidal predictions at thousands of subordinate stations.

Delaware River and Bay Atlas

This new information product is designed to provide, under one cover, all the tables and charts necessary to predict water levels and currents in the Delaware River and Bay. Computer-generated graphics enable tidal height and current predictions to be made throughout the estuary. This initial publication will be followed by similar atlases covering the Columbia RIver, Charleston Harbor, and Long Island Sound.
